Five concerts including two world premieres highlight Dallas Chamber Symphony’s 2018/19 season.

Dallas Chamber Symphony (DCS), under the direction of Artistic Director and Conductor Richard McKay, announces an exciting season of world premieres, internationally renowned guest artists, and UnSilent Films during its 2018/19 season.

Moody Performance Hall will come alive with classical favorites by Tchaikovsky, Bach, and Beethoven as well as twentieth-century works, including Bartok’s Romanian Folk Dances, Hanson’s Fantasy Variations on a Theme of Youth, and Martin’s Petite symphonie concertante.

The orchestra is thrilled to be working with violinist Chee-Yun on Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons, and 2018 Dallas International Piano Competition Winner, Hsin-Hao Yang, on Liszt’s First Piano Concerto. We’re also commissioning an exciting new piece from Kim Osberg (a local composer and rising star), for pairing with Copland’s popular Appalachian Spring Suite. The DCS opens its season with Buster Keaton’s groundbreaking 1923 comedy, Our Hospitality, a classic which helped pave the way for cinematic comedy – merging the physical gags Keaton became famous for with a dramatic storyline. Live orchestra brings this tale of star-crossed lovers and family feud to life with the world premiere of a score by Scott Glasgow, whose soundtrack for The Curse of the Sleeping Beauty won the 2016 Hollywood Music in Media Award in the category of “best music in an independent movie.” He has composed music for over 25 films including The Ninth Passenger, Marvel’s Captain America – Civil War, Poker Night, and Taking Chances.

DCS’s second concert of the season sends you on a musical journey through Europe, beginning with Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances, an early masterpiece comprised of six, short movements. The orchestra will also perform J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, featuring solos from Kyle Sherman on trumpet and Margaret Fischer on flute. Rounding out the evening is our virtuosic strings’ take on a memento from Tchaikovsky’s sojourn in Italy, his romantic Souvenir de Florence.

Hanson’s hauntingly beautiful Fantasy Variations On a Theme of Youth opens the evening with lush harmonies for piano and strings. Platinum artist and award-winning violinist Chee-Yun brings the evocative sounds of the tango to life as she and the DCS perform Piazzolla’s ever-entertaining The Four Seasons. The evening ends with Martin’s most important early work, his Petite symphonie concertante, which offers a quirky, modern take on baroque style, featuring double string orchestra, harp, piano and harpsichord.

An entertaining evening awaits you with Copland’s original suite from his Pulitzer Prize-winning Appalachian Spring ballet, commissioned by choreographer and dancer Martha Graham in 1944. The work’s Shaker influence and wide open harmonies have made it a beloved and worthy staple of the American chamber repertoire. By popular demand, the DCS will reprise Harold Lloyd’s delightful romantic comedy, Bumping Into Broadway, screened to the orchestra’s live performance of an original score it commissioned from Rolfe Kent, whose film credits include Sideways and Up In the Air. DCS also presents a world premiere written by Kim Osberg. An emerging local composer and alum of Indiana University, she recently premiered an original opera picked up by New Voices Opera.

The DCS’s season finale concert is an exploration of musical transformations, beginning with Korngold’s final work, his unabashedly cinematic Theme and Variations. Hsin-Hao Yang, winner of the Dallas International Piano Competition 2018, joins the orchestra on Liszt’s formidable First Piano Concerto – an architectural marvel that exudes flair and expressivity. The season closes with Beethoven’s triumphant Symphony No. 5.
