Are NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipsticks a Hit or Miss?

The not-so-new NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipsticks are enjoying a return to the spotlight after a late September release at Ulta stores.

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipsticks

I picked up two shades – Cherry Skies (top in the image above) – a rich wine red and Vintage (bottom in the image above) – a deep muted plum. I didn’t originally plan to review these. After I tried them, I reread the product description from the NYX website and decided I owe this product a review.

From the NYX website:

Our Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick glides on and sets into a striking matte finish. Velvety soft and waterproof, this long-lasting lippie creates a positively polished look with every swipe.

Huh?!? Let’s look at the above statement in two parts.

First…

These lippies do glide on and the color payoff is AMAZING with one swipe, but the finish is not a true matte. I would call the finish a demi matte or a satin. This does not takeaway from the work NYX put into creating these. It’s actually a great thing for lips because the olive and avocado oils allow these lippies to be moisturizing.

Before release, I had heard that customers may be expecting the Liquid Suede collection to be an upgrade to the Soft Matte Lip Creams. With NYX claiming they are “matte” in the description, I and several people I know we’re confused after first application. The dry down is not what you expect of a matte liquid lipstick.

Second…

I love the velvety demi matte finish of these. That’s a big win for this product…but they are not waterproof. I repeat, THESE LIPPIES ARE NOT WATERPROOF. They also transfer, a lot. They come off noticeably while drinking and eating.

I would say these lippies are fairly long-lasting and that they wear off better than the Soft Matte Lip Creams – no crumbling. You can also reapply with ease. This was not the case with the Soft Matte Lip Creams.

Overall, I do love the Liquid Suede collection and wish there were more shades that looked nice on my skin tone. I am not into novelty lipsticks like lavender, orange, or blue-gray. They just don’t play well with all skin tones or for all circumstances.

I really view the Liquid Suede collection as being a very sophisticated product from NYX. Because of that I would have loved for them to focus on a spectrum of truly wearable shades vs adding the lip circus shades.

  1. Horrible unless you have super plump lips, any one over 30 is going g to look like they’re dehydrated and the suede sits in the creases. Creases btw I didn’t even know I had until I tried this product. Yuk

  2. I FINALLY remembered to pick one of these up! I went with vintage and I figured it would be a good dramatic shade for my Halloween costume. Am a bit sad I skipped the violet color because I have a similar shade in my collection already. I really like this formula better than the matte cream lipsticks. Those are too drying!

    • Yay!! I love Vintage! Yes, the matte lip creams are drying. This is a great formula. I just wish NYX would stop calling it matte. It’s just not matte and I am ok with that!
